Story: Maple and the Pyre

A story I wrote for a small contest. Feedback and comments are appreciated.

Maple and the Pyre
by Jack Skye

~

The letters on the sign were carved by hand.
"Welcome to Pyrestown," Maple read aloud, crossing her legs and arms. Beneath the welcome was an intricate carving of a building set ablaze. "Odd thing to put as a mark."
Maple's Uncle Roman, dreary and looming as ever, hardly looked at the sign. Instead he was examining yet another of his small, tattered books, comparing it to the landscape around him, as if a tourist. He tucked the book into his crimson coat, adjusting his matching top hat, and looked sternly at the teen.
"Stop flying."
Maple looked down at the wooden staff she sat upon; perched on it like the witches of old atop their broomsticks. She adjusted the goggles on her forehead, uncrossed her arms to put her hands on her hips, and looked at him plainly.
"I'm not flying. I'm floating."
"Stop floating."

Bad Poetry # 1

I've been working on improving my imagery skills and realized that the best way to do this would be to write poetry.

After all, you get to write imagery without form. It's concentrated practice!

I'm really bad at poetry, but I thought I'd share it here for you anyway. You know, for a laugh.

So, here it is. Bad poetry.

Bad Poetry

Bad poetry is

like an old lemon that you

decided to eat for no reason

other than you wondered what

old lemon tasted like.

That's when you realized that

old lemons tasted like

dried out insults.

Too old to be sour.

Too weak to be good or bad or

a lemon at all.

Hello and welcome!

Today is quite a day.

My novel, THE 209 DETECTIVE AGENCY: MIKA'S MEMORY, is on sale in the Kindle store. You can click on the picture in the upper left corner of the site to see the entry on the Amazon.com site, it's quite simple to use.

Furthermore, today I received my first sale!

Quite an exciting moment. So, it seemed best that I take a second and introduce myself.

Hi. Call me Jack.

I'm going to use this site to talk about cool stories, share some scenes I write out, and draw ridiculously adorable but horribly drawn comics. Oh and keep you updated on new novels coming out.

So stick around! Should be fun.
